Hussong's takes its name from Hussong's Cantina in Ensenada, Baja California, opened by German immigrant Johann Hussong in 1892 and famous as one of the places credited with the first Margarita. The tequila line is brought to the US by McCormick Distilling Co. of Weston, Missouri. The Platinum is a cristalino: a 100% blue Weber agave añejo from the Tequila Valley of Jalisco, produced at NOM 1438 (earlier bottlings came from NOM 1489), crushed on a roller mill, double distilled in stainless steel pot stills, and aged in oak for at least a year before being filtered to remove the color the barrel added. It's bottled crystal clear at 40% ABV (80 proof). The idea behind the style is to keep the soft, rounded texture of an añejo while dropping some of its heavier wood, and tasters on Tequila Matchmaker find vanilla and oak leading, followed by cooked agave and black pepper, with a light body and a gentle finish. It's built to sip easily neat or on a big rock, and it makes a strikingly clear añejo Margarita or a Ranch Water with more depth than a blanco. Hussong's also bottles a Silver, Reposado and a standard Añejo.
