Three Fingers High 12 Year is a limited-edition Canadian whisky bottled by Pacific Edge Wine & Spirits, an Agoura Hills, California importer founded in 2002, from an undisclosed Canadian distillery. It is a blended 100% rye Canadian whisky, which in Canadian terms means a marriage of two kinds of rye spirit from the same source: a heavier, flavoring rye distilled in small batches on a pot still and a lighter base rye from a continuous column still, both laid down in casks for 12 years before blending, then finished in sherry casks and bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof). Twelve years is a long time for a Canadian rye, and the age shows in a profile the producer describes as complex and layered with spice, nutmeg and cinnamon and a deep, lingering finish; the sherry finish adds dried-fruit sweetness on top of the rye's natural pepper and baking spice. All-rye Canadian whisky is a different animal from the corn-heavy blends most people associate with the category, drier and spicier, closer to a Kentucky rye but softer from the years and the column-still component. Drink it neat, or in a Manhattan where the sherry finish and sweet vermouth lock together.
